Rafael Mazuz:
A Demonstrated Wound Care Business Expert

Why transact with a generalist, when you can partner with an authority?

Image-1-1.png

My journey in wound care began as a field medic, treating trauma under intense time constraints and high-pressure situations. Building on this foundation, I completed MBA studies across two continents and worked with a leading biomedical venture capital firm, gaining valuable experience in wound care due diligence.

Then, for over five years, I played a pivotal role in the opening, expansion, and direction of multi-million dollar advanced wound care centers for the world’s largest provider of wound management services. Starting with approximately 150 hospital-based centers, we grew to nearly 800 through a strategic mix of M&A and organic growth. In my capacity as Wound Care Director, I oversaw clinical-operational and financial performance, managing both clinical and administrative staff, with full P&L responsibility for each program.

Image-1-1.png

My leadership extended across community hospitals and top academic medical centers, with one of the centers I directed achieving recognition as a Center of Excellence and mentor site for the company. Reporting to the C-Suite of each hospital or health system, I had the pleasure of showing them how this (at the time) new type of dedicated service line benefitted their patients, their providers, their reputation and quality scores, and their financial bottom line. From CMOs and CNOs, to CEOs and CFOs, I opened their eyes to the importance and value of wound care services. With that realization came physical expansions and increased budgets, benefitting our patients, our management company, and our staff alike.

  • Development, implementation, and consulting for AWC service lines

My team and I were immersed in the world of wound care biomed and medtech solutions, evaluating and adopting advanced wound dressings, antimicrobials, diagnostics, imaging, biologics, drugs, oxygen therapies, EMRs, and new, emerging categories. As a key decision maker, I observed numerous companies, representatives, and executives navigate the complex landscape of the wound care market.

Today, my involvement in the wound care industry is deeper than ever, spanning our operating businesses, portfolio companies, industry events, and professional affiliations. Through Diligence Wound Care Global, I’ve advised 80% of the top 20 global wound care brands and played integral roles in significant M&A, partnerships, distribution, fundraising, and other deals over the past decade. We also develop, invest in, and support AWC service lines and medtech commercial management via Advanced Wound Care Global.

Contributing insights to leading healthcare, medtech, and investment publications / organizations, such as Healthcare Business International, The MedTech Strategist, Current Dermatology Reports, Asian Hospital & Healthcare Management, and Today’s Wound Clinic, is a commitment I uphold. Additionally, I actively participate in key industry conferences and seminars, serving as faculty and moderator for events like The European Wound Management Association (EWMA), The Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC), The Diabetic Foot Global Conference (DFCon), The AWC Summit (US and EU), and The Initiative on Chronic Wounds (ICW).

My contributions extend to serving on the board of directors and advisory boards for innovative companies in the space, including Tissue Analytics (acquired by Net Health in 2020), SastoMed (acquired by Mölnlycke Health Care in 2018), Corstrata, and Siren Care, among others. I am active across all of the global wound care markets.

In each aspect of my journey, my aim is to contribute valuable experience and insights that foster growth, innovation, and excellence within the dynamic field of wound care.

No. There are many fascinating companies building great things across healthcare and biomed. But if we cannot add “unique and consequential value,” then we are not the right partner.

However, there are many types of adjacent skin + wound care related opportunities that we can gladly consider, including: aesthetics, biotech / gene therapies, diagnostics + imaging, digital health / AI / sensors, emergency / trauma wound care, energy and plasma-based modalities, hemostatics, nutrition, operational / administrative solutions, pain management, population health management, prevention, scar mitigation, service lines, surgical closure, training / empowerment, and other non-traditional wound care categories.

A non-wound or skin care solution with compelling potential to be repurposed could also be of interest. Feel free to send an overview for our review.

Do you invest in companies as a capital allocator only, without any advisory, fiduciary, or other role?

In most instances, I approach investments with a multifaceted approach. While I do engage in capital allocation, I do so through the lens of a wound care operator and advisor. Typically, I consider investing in or joining the board of directors of a company only after establishing firsthand collaboration experiences as an advisor, user, customer, or through other firsthand professional interactions.

This approach ensures that any potential involvement goes beyond mere financial investment. By offering direct operational insights and strategic guidance, I aim to catalyze significant impact within the companies I engage with. Often, this level of involvement alone proves instrumental in facilitating exits, achieving financial sustainability, or attaining other critical milestones necessary for further growth.

It’s important to note that any financial investments I make are underpinned by a shared understanding: the value of my expertise and active participation far exceeds that of capital alone.

At what company stages do you ideally contribute?

For board of directors, advisory board, and related collaboration, we can consider involvement at any stage, including PE-backed and publicly traded firms.

For direct capital investments, we prefer to focus on Angel, Pre-seed, Seed, and Series A stages, but will consider later rounds as well. However, we almost always first collaborate in an advisory board, consulting, interim executive, or board member capacity prior to considering capital contributions. We have also supported pre-spinoff startups at the university / tech transfer / innovation program level, even prior to any formal incorporation or external fundraising.

Do you offer an incubator, accelerator, or venture studio program?

At present, we do not operate our own program. However, we have successfully collaborated with innovation ecosystems, participating in idea labs, pressure testing pitches, and judging applicants and pitch competitions. The possibility of formally offering such structures in the future remains open. Innovation programs, both existing and new, seeking collaboration (e.g., advisor in residence), are encouraged to reach out.

Are you affiliated with any external hedge funds or other institutional investment vehicles?

Currently, we do not have formal affiliations with external hedge funds or institutional investment vehicles. However, through our related advisory business, Diligence Wound Care Global, we have supported hundreds of VCs, PEs, hedge funds, banks, and other institutional investors in their investment due diligence, roll-ups/bolt-ons, turnarounds, interim executive, and related engagements.

If you are an institutional investor interested in discussing advisory, subject matter expertise, interim executive, and/or operating partner roles for planned or current wound care investments, you are invited to reach out. Rafael Mazuz is also available for short-term consultations directly or through any of the major expert networks (Alphasights, GLG, Guidepoint, etc.), you may request a consultation via your client manager on the platform.

Will you sign my CDA / NDA as a first step before reviewing materials or an intro call?

Typically, we do not sign a CDA / NDA prior to reviewing initial materials or having an introductory meeting. Here is a blog post by a VC explaining the compelling reasons for this reluctance.

Apart from those solid points, my unique position in the wound care industry increases the likelihood of being on one side or the other of the table in a potential future deal (acquirer / investor / board member or target / startup). To avoid potential conflicts and the need to recuse myself, I generally refrain from signing CDAs / NDAs at very early stages of exploration. Nevertheless, I am committed to maintaining a trustworthy reputation, even without a CDA / NDA in place. An exception to this rule might be for advising a diligence process on a tight timeline or via an expert network. In such cases, I would consider a CDA / NDA as part of the contract and SOW.

Are you able to assist us with non-equity based advisory (consulting), due diligence, wound care services management, or distribution?

For inquiries related to these areas, please contact us through our operating businesses, Diligence Wound Care Global (AWC strategic / commercial advisory + due diligence), or Advanced Wound Care Global (AWC services + commercialization management).

How can I get in touch with one of your portfolio companies for possible collaboration or investment?

As an alternative to reaching out to the specific company via their website, you can send us a specific, detailed request to info[at]woundcare.global . If deemed of interest, we will be delighted to pass it on to the appropriate person at the company.

Can Rafael provide insights or contribute as a speaker / faculty / moderator / panelist / guest / author for my upcoming conference / certification / corporate meeting / article / podcast?

I have been honored to contribute to all of the above formats over the years.

If the focus, target audience, venue, time, and other details are aligned, I’ll be happy to consider it. But please understand that I receive far more requests than I am able to accept. Please provide as much detailed information as you can in your initial inquiry.

I’m not ready to engage yet, but would like some resources on the business of wound care. Can you point me to some resources?

Certainly. Check out The Wound Care Global blog, our list of upcoming wound care (and related) events, The Wound Care Global YouTube page, Today’s Wound Clinic, and these other links about wound care business. Some of our portfolio companies, such as Corstrata and vTail also share valuable information on wound care services and products.
